Why Dasuki was prevented from travelling – DSS

The Department of State Services has explained that it prevented the former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.), from travelling abroad for medical treatment because he refused to appear before a committee set up by the Federal Government to investigate a N2billion arms transaction by the Goodluck Jonathan administration.

The service stated that Dasuki was invited to shed light on his involvement in the arms procurement processes, but had consistently refused to honour the committee’s invitation.

    

The DSS, in a statement on Thursday by an official, Tony Opuiyo, accused the former NSA of grandstanding and blackmail. The agency denied blocking Dasuki’s residence in violation of a subsisting court order granting him a relief to travel oversea for medical services, describing the allegation as “unfounded and malicious aimed at tarnishing the good image of the Service.” The statement read, “It may be recalled that Dasuki was initially arrested and charged to court for unlawful possession of firearms and money laundering, for which reason his international passport was seized and on the order of the court, returned to the registrar for custody.

“What has however brought the seeming standoff between Dasuki and the Service, despite the court-ordered release of his international passport on November 4, 2015, is his refusal to appear before a Committee undertaking the investigation of an entirely different case. “The public may wish to note that the government set up the committee to investigate procurement processes relating to a $2billion arms transaction by the last administration, under which Sambo was the NSA.

“It was on this premise that he was invited by the Committee to shed more light on his involvement in the deal. It therefore remains surprising and shocking that Sambo has refused to honour invitations of the committee but instead resorts to grandstanding and subtle blackmail of the Service. “His refusal to appear before the committee has left the Service with no option than to adopt legal means to ensure his attendance.”

The service accused Dasuki of pulling all strings available to him to evade justice and put it in bad light, stressing that it was not persecuting him.

 

But in a swift response Dasuki said after making his position clear, the SSS operatives threatened his personal security saying they “can force themselves into the House.” He said his current travails started on Tuesday after Justice Adeniyi Ademola of the Federal High court ordered his passport returned to him to enable him go abroad for medical treatment. He said he received “intelligence” that an order was given to the operatives to effect his arrest at the airport.
As a result, he failed to leave on Wednesday as arranged. He also said the SSS invited a former governor of Adamawa State, Boni Haruna, who stood as his surety in court, and intimidated him. “They brought Boni Haruna to my house yesterday asking him to invite me to go with them just to clarify something. I told them that since this matter is in court, I am not under obligation to deal with them and advised them to go to court if they have any issue related to the case,” he said. Mr. Dasuki accused the SSS and the governing All Progressives Congress of abuse of power. “We were also in power and if we had abused it the way they are doing now, they would never have been here,” he said. “It is unfortunate.”
The former NSA said the way the SSS was handling the matter was exactly how things were poorly handled in the past that then threw up the Boko Haram insurgency. “Instead of following the legal way of doing things, some people decided to take the laws into their hands and see where we are today,” he said.

Police raided Lil Wayne's home

Lil Wayne's Miami Beach mansion has been raided by police who have removed objects to satisfy a $2 million debt he owes a jet company.

The 33-year-old rapper's home was stormed by police on Tuesday who seized assets as he had failed to pay a $2 million judgement to an jet leasing company, Signature Group, as well as a further $200,000 of legal fees.

During the raid, cops seized pieces from Wayne’s $30 million art collection. Reacting to the raid, Dwayne Michael Carter Jr, who was out of town at that time said "It's days like 2day dat make me? In helicopter footage of his sprawling estate, authorities can be seen removing items and placing them into a lorry with several of his sales plaques being taken. According to sources, an expert was taken into his home to value items worth seizing to satisfy the debt.

Wayne - who served eight months in prison in 2010 for criminal possession of a weapon and marijuana - was not at home during the raid and is believed to be in Los Angeles, where he was seen at a strip club on Monday. And although his security team attempted to prevent police from entering the home, a court order stated Miami-Dade County Sheriff's deputies should break the locks to get in if necessary.

Katy Perry has been named the highest earning female musician for 2015 with R1,8 billion, while Taylor Swift came in second with R1,1 billion.

Lamar Odom's camp was reportedly upset at Khloe Kardashian for ditching him for James Harden's basketball game, Radar Online reported. They thought that the "Keeping Up with the Kardashians" star wasn't sincere about taking care of the former NBA star.

 He believes that the rapidly spreading of HIV/AIDS across Africa, is because most african's are afraid to come out publicly to say they are gay. Sir Elton and his husband, David Furnish, will unveil a new partnership with the US President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), inconjuction with the Elton John AIDS Foundation. Each contributing $5 million to a fund to increase access to medication for people with HIV and AIDS in countries that are prejudiced toward the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community.


 


As at today, most african countries have vehemently refused to recognize LGBT community. In some countries it is punishable under law, with up to 14-year jail sentence on anyone that is gay. On Thursday, Elton John Aids Foundation has gave $5m to organisations in sub-Saharan Africa who work with lesbian, bisexual, gay and transgender people suffering from AIDS or HIV.
He said the stigmatization they suffer makes them more vulnerable to contracting the disease. “We’re seeing an alarming growth in infections amongst these communities [where] we find that LGBT people are stigmatized where they live,” John told CNBC’s Tania Bryer.
“It stigmatizes the disease and the conditions where they live and so they don’t come out and have HIV tests. They feel nervous about going on the medication, about being labelled or branded as someone with HIV, so we really have to go in and attack the root of the problem and that is the stigmatization and the lack of safe access to treatment and advice and counselling.
“Otherwise, we won’t stop the disease in its tracks.”

KNUST Students Ended Up Fingering Me

It has emerged the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology paid female singer Mzbel GHc 50,000 for the attack on her by some students of the school during a 2005performance.

The singer has for the first time in 10 years revealed she received the sum as compensation, and also to prevent her from pressing for damages at the law courts.

“It was GHc 50,000,” she told Stacy Amoateng on last weekend’s edition of the Restoration With Stacy personality talk show. Real name Belinda Nana Akua Amoah, she was molested by a group of students of the university who had called for her to continue performing when she was done with her booked, stage time.

“When my crew and I were leaving the auditorium, some of the students came up to me, saying they wanted to take pictures with me. While we were at it, others came from nowhere to shake my hands,” she narrated (in January 2006) the scenes that led to her October, 2005 ordeal.

“Unfortunately, that exit was like a big window through which I had to jump. Just when I was about to jump, someone grabbed hold of my legs and within a twinkle of an eye, there were a whole mob of students pulling my legs.”

Her trousers and underpant were pulled down in the process. The mob took advantage of her nakedness and started fingering her.“They revealed everything by pulling my pants and trousers down to my knee”.

She subsequently sued the university, claiming damages to the tune of ¢600 million (now GHc 60, 000).

Filed at an Accra High Court on Wednesday January 18, 2006, and led by her then manager and now ex convict Isaac Abeidu Aidoo, a.k.a ‘Goodies’, it had KNUST as first defendant: The Vice Chancellor as second defendants, and the college of Art as third defendant.

The fourth, fifth and sixth defendants were Alex Dapaah, Aaron Edusah Poku and Theodore Djokoto all students of the university at the time.

In a statement of claim, the plaintiffs said “that by a performance contract entered with them and an invitation by the 2nd defendant to perform and to enable them celebrate their Art Society week to be climaxed by a live musical performance, the 1st plaintiff, Mzbel amongst other musical artistes and performers were scheduled and invited to perform on the night of October 1, 2005 at the KNUST campus, Kumasi.

“The plaintiffs shall contend that the arrangement, safety and security of the venue and that of artistes before during and after the live performance, devolved absolutely on the 1st and 2nd defendants. By this invitation and performance contract executed, any failures or omissions on their part shall result in a vicarious liability to them.”

“The plaintiffs say that while the 1st plaintiff was performing live on stage reserved for the artistes, without any invitation, provocation and permission, a number of male students invaded the stage and in their frenzy without any provocation violently assaulted the 1st plaintiff which assault can best be described as sexual by all imagination.”

The statement of claim further said Dapaah, Poku and Djokoto inserted their fingers into her private part, and also indiscriminately fondled her breast. She sustained bruises on her face and body, causing her excruciating pains, the statement added.

The claim also called for sanctions to be imposed on Alex Dapaah, Aaron Edusah Poku and Theodore Djokoto, and payment of fees to Mzbel and Goodies Productions’ lawyers.

A report by a student fact-finding committee later sought to punch holes in her claims. Among other things they suggested Mzbel and her three dancers made lewd gestures that may have inspired the students’ bad behaviour.

She shot down the suggestions.

“It had nothing to do with the way I was dressed. Even on that night when I performed, I was not wearing any extraordinary clothes. I was in a pair of trousers and a jacket.”

Lerato Kganyago's heartbreak over miscarriage

South Africa's top TV and radio personalities Lerato Kganyago is pained of the lost joy of motherhood due to a miscarriage.

According to Sunday World, the popular OAP whose sad incident happened about three weeks ago was so pained. A distraught Kganyago was said to have confirmed the sad news, but declined commenting on the issue, saying she was still hurting. "It's a sensitive matter and I'm still not ready to talk about it yet," said Kganyago.

"Can you guys please give me an opportunity to deal with this on my own as privately as I can?" News that Kganyago lost her precious cargo was revealed by the Metro FM DJ's relative, who did not want to be named for fear of being ostracised by the family. The next of kin said Kganyago had rhapsodically told them she was duffed up with her new boyfriend's child and was looking forward to being a first-time mother.

The relative added that the The Link presenter and her boyfriend, a businessman from North West, were excited after their first visit to her gynaecologist. While there for a sonogram, they saw the heartbeat of the foetus. "She was really excited and looking forward to being a mother," said the relative. Relating her ordeal, the relative said the former Muvhango actress collapsed at her Fourways, Joburg, crib after suffering a wave of cramps about three weeks ago.

"She was rushed to a local hospital after she bled profusely," said the relative. "She was shattered when the doctors told her she had lost the child. She is devastated." The relative said the talented club DJ broke down at a wedding in Mafikeng last weekend when her boyfriend's friends and relatives, who did not know of her loss, mobbed and congratulated her for being preggies. "She got into her car and just broke down. Her partner had to explain to well wishers that they had actually lost the child."

The relative said Kganyago was contemplating following traditional culture. This was in a bid to organise a ritual ceremony to cleanse her after the loss. "I think that is when she will talk freely about this. Right now, she's still hurting."

 

Forest Whitaker to play Archbishop Desmond Tutu in new movie

Oscar-winning American actor Forest Whitaker is set to portray Archbishop Desmond Tutu in an upcoming movie.

The Hollywood Reporter confirms that Whitaker will star in director Roland Joffe ‘s screen adaptation of The Archbishop and the Antichrist.

The Archbishop and the Antichrist is based on a play by Michael Ashton of the same name, fictionalizing the account of Tutu’s meetings with murderer Piet Blomfield who seeks redemption for the atrocities he’s committed while he serves a life sentence in prison in post-apartheid South Africa.

According to The Hollywood Reporter Vince Vaughn will play Piet Blomfield.

Senate president Bukola Saraki has filed an appeal at the Supreme Court

The Nigeria Senate President Bukola Saraki has today filed an appeal at the Supreme Court as his fight against the judgment of the Court of Appeal, last month which upheld the decision of Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) to try him charge for his alleged false declaration of assets. While he was the then governor of Kwara state.

The Court of Appeal had on October 30th ruled that The C.C.T. had the jurisdiction to try the senate president, as provided for and defined by The Constitution..

In his appeal, as filed by his lead counsel, Joseph Daudu (SAN) on his behalf. Before The Supreme Court today, The Senate president raised seven grounds of appeal in his notice in which he asked the Supreme Court to set aside the judgment of the Court of Appeal, the entire proceedings of the C.C.T. and the charges preferred against him before the tribunal.

This appeal and application for stay of proceedings filed may not affect proceedings before the C.C.T. tomorrow. As the Supreme Court will most likely not sit before then to consider any of the filed documents.
